Passport Statistics Tutorial

Hi!  This tutorial will show you how to use the Passport database to find and use statistics for research on countries, industries, and more.

Later in this tutorial you will be using the site on the right side of the screen.  For now, just use the arrows below to advance to the next page.

What is Passport?

Passport is a database containing product, industry, and market data for global countries. The information in Passport is compiled and reported by analysts who work for Euromonitor, a market research firm headquartered in the United Kingdom.

Before searching Passport, it’s helpful to remember the following:

• Passport is a British product, so it uses the Queen’s English. For example, cookies are “biscuits."

• Financial data are usually displayed in a country’s home currency. You may need to convert currencies to U.S. dollars ($) to compare countries with different currencies.

• The amount and type of information available differs from report to report. Statistics available for one country/industry may be unavailable for another.

Accessing Passport

Are you on campus right now?  If so, you should be able to see the Passport  Terms and Conditions page on the right side of this screen.

If you're viewing this tutorial off campus, you may see a screen asking for your Butler ID and password. Enter this information now to access Passport.

Scroll to the bottom of the database page on the screen to the right, and accept Passport's terms and conditions, which will bring you to the Passport home page.

Statistics vs. Analysis

You should now be looking at Passport's Home Screen.  Most of the information you will find in Passport is available in two formats:  

1) Statistics 

2) Analysis

Statistics are presented in table format while Analysis is provided through narrative reports on a topic.  Passport also has a Dashboard feature for reviewing data visually on interactive maps.

This tutorial will focus on finding Statistics.

Search Statistics

Now take a look at the Passport Home screen. To quickly find statistics on a topic or "category," we are going to use the option for Search Statistics, which is one of the boxes on the home screen.

The Search Statistics option allows you to find country rankings under one of two broad categories:  

1) Industries and 2) Economies and Consumers.  

In this tutorial, we will focus on the Industries category.

Selecting an Industry Category

Let's say that we are researching the potential for a new coffee product, and we would like to know more about the size of the coffee market for countries around the world.

To begin, select the Industries option under "Search Statistics" on the home page.  (It should already be selected by default on the Passport Home page, but if not, select Industries now).

Now click on the dropdown menu to Choose Industry, and scroll down to select Hot Drinks, which is a broad category covering different hot beverages.

To select the sub-category for coffee,  click on Choose Category, and choose Coffee.  Your Search Box should look something like this:

Now click "Go."

Reviewing a Statistics Table

You should now be looking at a Passport Statistics table for the Market Sizes for coffee in countries around the world.  

Study the layout of the table and note the following:

• You can sort or filter the results in each column, much like you would in an Excel spreadsheet.
• The default view of the table provides historical data for last year, and it also provides a forecast. The forecasted results are shown in italics. You have the option to change the time period to include different years.
• Notice at the top of the table that you also have options to Convert Data or Change Data Types. 
  

If needed, you can use the scroll bar at the bottom of the table to see more columns on the right.

Each table column shows dollar values ranked from "highest to lowest," but you can change this to "lowest to highest" by clicking on a column heading.

Try that now by clicking on the 2018 column. (Tip: You may have to click twice on the column heading to change the ranking.) The data should now show market size ranked from lowest to highest.

Changing Data in a Statistics Table

The Statistics table we found provides historical data for just one year, but Passport offers the option to change that.

Let's say we also want to see market size data for each year going back to 2014.  To do that, look for the table's dropdown box that shows the range of years.  Change the year in the first box to "2014" and then click Apply as shown in the image below.

You should now see a historical ranking for each country going back to 2014. 

Converting from currency to percentages

Besides looking at the size of the market in terms of dollar size, it is often helpful to compare the annual growth of the market in each country over time. You can easily do that in Passport.

At the top of the Statistics table, look for the dropdown box titled "Convert Data"  Clicking on this box will allow you to convert the data in various ways.  For example, you could look at market sizes in local currencies (instead of U.S. dollars).

You can also convert your data to see the percentage of year-to-year growth of the market.  Try that now:

• Under the Convert Data box, click on "Growth," and then choose "Year-on-year growth (%).

The Statistics table should now show year-on-year growth of the coffee market in each country in percentages rather than overall market size in U.S. dollars.

On the Statistics table that you just converted, find the forecasted percentage growth for 2019-20. If the column is not already ranked from highest to lowest, click on the column heading to change that.  TIP:  You may have to click on the column heading more than once to get to the ranking you need.

Other Statistical Reports

Before we close out the statistical table on the coffee market, let's take a moment to look at some additional interesting options for reviewing the data.

In the first column of the table, you should see a heading for "Stats Type" and colored icons (similar to the image pictured below).  Each colored icon refers to additional related reports and/or tables that you can access by clicking on that icon.

For example, by clicking on the blue icon on a row, you can review a table of top coffee brands in that country.

Try some of the options yourself by clicking on different icons next to table rows.

Do you see how you can use a Statistics table on market size to lead you to additional information on brand and company shares, distribution, and pricing?

Printing and Saving a Statistics Table

When you create a Statistics table in Passport, you may want to save it or print it to review later. Passport offers several ways to do this.

If you look in the upper right corner of the Statistics table, you should see icons that look something like this:

From here, you can choose to print your table, download it as an Excel or PDF file, or save the content to a free personal account that you can set up in Passport.

Conclusion

In this tutorial, you have learned how to use the Passport database in several ways, including how to...

• Conduct a Statistics search to find industry market size for a selected product category.
• Use the Time Series option to add historical or forecasted data.
• Use the ranking list in the Statistics table to display data from highest to lowest (or vice versa).
