Get a Book through Butler

In this tutorial, you will learn how to get a print book or eBook through Butler University Libraries.

Books may be available to you in two formats:  1. print, and 2. eBook.

Information about the format of a book is provided on the search results page.

In the search box to the right, type words to search for any book by author, title, or subject.

Look through the search results to find a print book and an eBook.  (You can narrow your search results to only books by checking "Book" in the "Format" box in the window to the right of this tutorial.) 

Some books are available in both print and eBook formats.

For example, E.E. Cummings' book titled Complete Poems, 1904-1962 is available as a print book and as an eBook.

The "Print book" information tells you that the book is available in print.

The "View online" information tells you that the book is available as an eBook.

The call number at the bottom of the search result listing for Complete Poems, 1904-1962 tells you where the print copy of the book is located on a shelf at Butler University.

This book is available in Irwin Library at Butler University.

The call number for this print book at Irwin Library is: PS3505.U334 A17 1994   

The call number at the bottom of the listing for a print book titled Nuclear Engineering Handbook tells you that the book is located in the Science Library at Butler University.

 The call number for this print book at the Science Library is:  TK9151.E8

Options for viewing an eBook vary, depending on the book.  To look at an eBook, look for links in the search result with words such as "Read Online," "Download," and "Full Text."

Many eBooks have options for online reading and downloading.

The following three images provide examples of options for viewing eBooks:

Books listed in search results may be available to you through three kinds of libraries:  

• Butler University Libraries
• PALNI (Private Academic Library Network of Indiana)
• other libraries throughout the world

As you have seen, books held by Butler University Libraries are readily available to you as print books or eBooks.

PALNI is an organization that allows Butler University Libraries and libraries at many other colleges and universities in Indiana to share items, such as books.

"Other libraries throughout the world" are libraries that are not Butler University Libraries or other PALNI libraries.

If Butler University Libraries does not hold a book that you want, that book may be held by another PALNI library.  If that book is held by another PALNI library, you may request that book.

For example, the book titled A Concise Handbook of Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering Sciences is not held by Butler Libraries, but the book is held by Trine University, which is in PALNI.  

To request that this print book at Trine University be sent to you here at Butler University, click the "Place Hold" button.

Another example, the print book titled Abnormal Psychology: The Science and Treatment of Psychological Disorders is not held by Butler University Libraries or another PALNI library, but it is held by other libraries.

To request this book, click the "Request Item" button.
